James Sulzer, PhD
Associate Professor

216-957-3739
Education:
-
PhD, Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University (2009)
-
MS, Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University (2006)
-
BS, Mechanical Engineering, Ohio Sate University (2002)
Dr. Sulzer is a Staff Scientist at the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute and Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. He has a courtesy appointment in Biomedical Engineering at CWRU. He also holds an Investigator position with the Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center at Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center (LSCVAMC). Prior to his arrival back in his hometown, Dr. Sulzer was faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (now Shirley Ryan AbilityLab), and was an ETH Fellow for his postdoctoral training at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (ETHZ). He has a wife and three young children. One of his children suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in May 2020 and his caregiving experience was detailed in a journal article and later featured in The Atlantic.
Ricardo Siu, PhD
Postdoctoral Scholar
216-957-3514
-
PhD, Biomedical Engineering, Florida International University (2019)
-
BS, Biomedical Engineering, Florida International University (2012)
Dr. Siu earned his BS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Florida International University. His PhD thesis focused on the development of a closed-loop neuromorphic controller for control of ventilation after spinal cord injury. After obtaining his PhD, he pursued a postdoctoral position at the University of Louisville where he carried out clinical studies investigating the use of non-invasive transcutaneous stimulation of the spinal cord to restore locomotor function after paralysis. His current focus is on investigating the use of transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation to condition spinal reflexes after stroke. He is interested in the development of adaptive neurorehabilitative technology and methodology that can adapt itself to meet the patient’s needs to improve function after neurological trauma and/or disease.
Sebastian Correa, BS
PhD Student
Education:
-
BS, Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh (2022)
Mr. Correa is a doctoral student researcher earning a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. Prior to joining the Rewire lab, he acquired a BS in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. During his undergraduate studies, he supported research aimed at decoding muscle signals of functional movements of the forearm in people with spinal cord injury. His current research focus is examining functional neuroplasticity of spinal reflex circuits via an operant conditioning neurofeedback paradigm as it relates to individuals post stroke with stiff knee gait.
